NHS Reform

The coalition government plans to reform the NHS by building a service that is personal, fair and diverse, with patients at the heart of everything it does. The recently published white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS spelt out far-reaching plans that have been heralded as the most radical since 1948.

The Secretary of State, Andrew Lansley, has been planning a healthcare service led by clinicians and patients for several years. His transformational vision is set to expunge bureaucratic targets, yield improvements over a plethora of services aiming to achieve £20bn of efficiency savings, and produce a 45% reduction in management costs by 2014.

This is a major change to the NHS and shifting decision-making in this will result in changes to responsibilities and more localised services. The shape of the NHS organisation is going to change to reflect this. Consequently there will be no Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts in the new NHS andscape.
